What's a good domain name for my business?
What's a Domain Name?
Your domain name is your website address. Imagine the street address or post office box of your home or business. The domain name is what you share so that people can find your products and services on the Internet.
The short brief of what domain to consider:
- Shorter the better
- Aim for .COMs
- Branded, catchy and easy to remember
- Easy to say
- Not hard to spell
- Cannot include special characters like ”+“, “&”, “%”, etc.
- Not similar to competing domain names
- Not a violation of someone's trademark
Case Sensitive?
Are domain names case sensitive? No, domain names are not case sensitive. This means www.MyBusiness.com the same as www.mybusiness.com.
Short or long?
Keep it short means keeping it easy to type and easy to remember. Buystoragebuildingsinmytown.com may be full of search friendly terms, but it is also one that can present stumbling blocks in both typing all the appropriate characters, or the possibility of leaving out part of it when sharing with friends.
Shorter domain names also make it easier for placing in advertising and on business cards.
.COMs?
Focus on the .COMs. Even today there are people using the web frequently that assume that .COMs are all that are out there. If you're not concerned with people typing in your domain name but rather just getting to you through a link this one is not as much a concern.
Avoid hyphens or numbers?
Can you say your domain name easily to someone without needing to explain it? A good practice would be to avoid using hyphens and numbers in your name. Even spelled out numbers can present a difficulty when it comes to sharing your address with someone. Consider how easy or difficult it might be to get someone to type a domain name if you shared it with them over a phone.
Keep it unique.
If your domain name is very similar to competing domain you could lose traffic. But an odd or unnatural spelling of a known word just to be unique can also lead to disaster.
Avoid Copyright Infringement
This doesn't happen often but is something to consider. For instance, if your a real estate agent it would be helpful to know that you cannot use Realtor in your domain name. To make sure your not infringing on anyone's copyright before you buy you can visit www.copyright.gov and check your domain name.
